A. VARLEY. LINC. R.’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eARTHUR VARLEY’S home address when he enlisted into the army was 32 Beaufort Place, Roundhay Road, Leeds, and he was a copper tube piercer by profession.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eHe first enlisted into the 2\/4\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e Battalion Royal Scots on the 12\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e of December 1915 but was transferred to the 31\u003csup\u003est\u003c\/sup\u003e Protection Company of the Royal Defence Corps circa September 1916 and then moved to other units including the 325\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e and 461st Company RDC, before his eventual transfer to the Lincolnshire Regiment around August 1918.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eHe appears to have suffered a gunshot wound to his chest on the 9\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e of November 1918, two days before armistice, whilst serving with the 7\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e Battalion in France, and he was taken to Rouen. \u003ci\u003ePlease note however, the entry is difficult to read, but appears to say ‘GW chest wall’, not GSW as usually appears, and this is followed by reference to Rouen.\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eA VARLEY is also named in the War Office Daily List No 5753, described as wounded, incident date 20\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e December 1918, and entitled to wear a ‘Wound Stripe’.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eHe appears in the Absent Voters List in 1919, described as a Lance Corporal with the 3\u003csup\u003erd\u003c\/sup\u003e Battalion the Lincolnshire Regiment, and a JAMES VARLEY, presumably his brother, of the same address, appears also, as Private 40165 of the 15\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e Battalion the West Yorkshire Regiment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: normal;\"\u003eSELLER NOTE = Supporting documentation obtained and \/ or created during my research into this medal will be provided.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Maddox Medals \u0026 Militaria","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":54432191119706,"sku":null,"price":40.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1013\/7180\/6042\/files\/IMG_4081.jpg?v=1784115772","url":"https:\/\/maddoxmedals.co.uk\/products\/ww1-victory-medal-single-medal-only-awarded-to-private-arthur-varley-of-the-7th-service-battalion-lincolnshire-regiment-wounded-in-action-in-france-two-days-before-armistice","provider":"Maddox Medals \u0026 Militaria ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
